Anushka Sharma turns 34: From NH10 to Pari, looking back at some of her most memorable film roles on her birthday

Anushka Sharma has made a name for herself as one of the most sought after leading ladies in Bollywood today. Beginning her career as a model, the star made a splash right from her debut role. She shared screen with Shah Rukh Khan in 2008’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. With almost 20 films to her name, the actress had also ventured into production. She started her Clean Slate Filmz production banner along with her brother Karnesh Ssharma but unfortunately, the actress stepped down from the company in March this year.

After a gap of almost three years, Anushka will next grace the screen in Chakda 'Xpress. She essays the role of cricketer Jhulan Goswami in the movie.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Anushka seemed to knock it out of the park with her very first film opposite a legend like Shah Rukh Khan. The 2008 Aditya Chopra directorial follows the story of meek looking Suri (SRK) and his wife, the bubbly Taani (Anushka). Forced into marriage as part of her dying father’s last wish, Taani realises that she has little in common with Suri. When Taani wants to participate in a dance competition, Suri uses the opportunity to transform himself into her uber cool dancing partner Raj. Still unaware that Raj and Suri are one, Taani finds herself falling for Raj.

Band Baaja Baaraat

Starring Ranveer Singh and Anushka in lead roles, this Maneesh Sharma directed rom com marked the former’s Bollywood debut. Band Baaja Baaraat follows the story of Bittoo and Shruti who, after a series of events, decide to go into business together as wedding planners. Amidst the chaos of catering to their clientele, their partnership complicates thanks to their budding romance. The 2010 film was a hit with critics and audiences alike and was also remade into Tamil as Aaha Kalyanam with Nani and Vaani Kapoor in the lead roles.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, PK is the quirky story of an alien who makes his way onto Earth and is stranded when the device which can take him back to his home, gets stolen. Striking up a friendship with journalist Jaggu, PK is flabbergasted by the religious customs on the strange planet and forces the people around him to to deal with some of his radical observations. Aamir Khan and Anushka star in the film as PK and Jaggu respectively. The movie received critical acclaim and holds its place as one in the list of the top grossing Indian films of all time.

Pari saw Anushka in one of her first roles in the horror genre. This 2018 Prosit Roy directorial follows the story of Rukhsana, a young woman who is found in a tragic state by a man who accidentally hits and kills her mother. Unaware to him, she has an even more tragic past, her birth ebing the result of a satanic ritual. The cult behind it did not stop their search for her either. The film was also produced under the Clean Slate Filmz production banner.

This 2015 action thriller was directed by Navdeep Singh and produced by Anushka’s production banner. She also stars in the film as Meera, whose holiday getaway with her husband takes a turn for the worse when they encounter a vicious gang’s honour killing. As the gang set their sights on the couple, they struggle to escape harm. Anushka was the recipient of widespread praise for her performance as tough as nails Meera.

Sui Dhaaga

This 2018 film revolves around the story of Mamta and Mauji, a small town couple, who decide to start a clothing business. However, surrounded by unscrupulous people and with their struggling financials in dire states, the task is easier said than done. Anushka stars as Mamta and Varun Dhawan essays the role of Mauji. The two actors were the subject of praise for their compelling performances. Sui Dhaaga was directed by Sharat Katariya.
